Description: The Compassion Scale is a 16-item instrument the measures an individual's ability to be kind and understanding, instead of critical, to others during times of suffering or failure.
Adult self-report ages: 18+ years
The scale has 4 components:
- Kindness - being patient and understanding of another person's feelings and/or aspects of their personality
- Adult - items 2, 6, 10, 14
- Common Humanity - recognizing shared feelings and experiences of others
- Adult - items 4, 8, 12, 16
- Mindfulness - maintaining a balanced view of another person's feelings and experiences
- Adult - items 1, 5, 9, 13
- Indifference (reverse scored) - being unconcerned or disconnected from another person's feelings
- Adult - items 3, 7, 11, 15

Scoring: Higher mean score indicates more compassion.
Each item is rated 1 to 5.
Score ranges:
1.0 - 2.49: Low compassion
2.5-3.5: Moderate compassion
3.51-5.0: High compassion
