Differentiating between diagnostic and symptom monitoring PROMs is valuable as each patient and provider has different goals during the course of treatment. Below is a brief description of the difference.
Diagnosis-Specific PROMs
Purpose: For assisting with identification of a specific diagnosis, or aid with diagnosis and treatment planning.
Often based on DSM-5 or ICD-10 criteria.
Examples: PHQ-9 for depression, Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale for ADHD, Dimensional Obsessive-Compulsive Scale for OCD
Symptom Monitoring PROMs
Purpose: For tracking symptom severity, treatment progress, or outcomes over time.
Measures are not diagnostic tools but can be used to identify risk of specific disorders or conditions.
Examples: PROMIS measures, NIH Toolbox measures
